Walter doubles the Tiger tec® Gold range for turning applications

Service life plus: around 50 percent

With the WPP10G for continuous cuts and lightly interrupted cuts, the universal grade WPP20G and the tough grade WPP30G for interrupted cuts and unfavorable machining conditions, Walter offers its customers three Tiger tec® Gold grades especially for turning. After their very successful market launch at the end of 2021, the manufacturer is now doubling its range: the positive inserts CCMT, DCGT and negative, single-sided inserts CNMM, SNMM and WL25 are now being added to the already introduced indexable inserts with a double-sided negative basic shape (CNMG, DNMG, …). -Copy turntables added. They are expanding the Walter Tiger·tec® Gold portfolio with three cutting materials, now 21 geometries and over 1,100 items – including special geometries with improved chip breaking (MP6) and for roughing large forged parts (HU7).

Like the existing inserts, the newly added types of turning have their main application in steel (secondary application in cast iron). In 130 customer tests, they achieved increases in service life of around 50 percent on average. The reason for this is a special layer structure: A patent-pending, highly textured, multi-layer MT-TiCN layer increases toughness, reduces flank wear, and thus lowers production costs.

The highly textured Al2O3 layer on top minimizes crater wear; the final gold-colored top layer improves wear detection. In addition, there is a multi-stage after-treatment. This creates an unusually smooth chip surface, thereby reducing friction and also increasing toughness. Which not least ensures high process reliability in automated processes.
